NIMH's PTSD page is careful to distinguish PTSD from ordinary distress after a hard event. Most people exposed to trauma do not develop PTSD; those who do have a characteristic cluster of intrusion, avoidance, and arousal symptoms that persist beyond a month.
The treatment section names the trauma-focused therapies with the strongest evidence (prolonged exposure, cognitive processing therapy, EMDR) and is appropriately measured about pharmacotherapy.
