The NHS Providers monthly Activity Tracker for the 2025/26 year opens with all-time-high demand: 2.05 million people in contact with mental health services and 2.29 million open referrals. Children and young people waiting for a first contact alone numbered 393,040 in February.
The data is the most reliable monthly read on the operational state of English mental health care and is consistent with the structural picture the CQC and Rethink have described from different angles.
